MSB Sponsors GNOSEF Electrical Engineering Project Awards
Company Engaged in Initiatives Supporting STEM Programs
Metairie, LA. —March 21, 2019—M S Benbow & Associates (MSB) once again is taking part in the region’s longest-running academic event committed to inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers, the Greater New Orleans Science & Engineering Fair (GNOSEF).
This year, MSB was sponsor of the awards for outstanding investigative projects in the field of Electrical Engineering Senior Division, awarded to innovative electrical engineering projects by high school students. MSB CEO and Founding Partner Michael S. Benbow, P.E., is GNOSEF Past President and a member of the Board of Directors. The 63rd-annual regional science fair took place over Feb. 18-22 at the Tulane University Lavin-Bernick Center.
“Giving young people an opportunity to collaborate with other students interested in the sciences, teachers, scientists and engineers exposes them to the vast world of discovery that STEM careers can provide,” MSB President Leo L. Holzenthal, Jr., said. “Community engagement is a core value at MSB, and we especially enjoy being involved with events that help nurture a passion for the field of engineering and the jobs of the future.”
Started in 1956, GNOSEF is one of the nation’s oldest events aimed at encouraging independent student research in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and stimulating an interest in STEM careers.
“This annual gathering of curious young students and dedicated STEM teachers serves as an educational platform for creating a brighter future for everyone in our community,” said Annette Oertling, GNOSEF co-director.
GNOSEF hosts over 300 middle school and high school students from the Greater New Orleans area. GNOSEF awards more than $65,000 in cash and non-cash awards, prizes, grants and scholarships to GNOSEF winners. Sixty category winners at the GNOSEF are eligible to compete for state honors at the Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair held at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
Recognized with the 2018 Louisiana Small Business Award for Outstanding Growth, MSB is engaged in several initiatives supporting STEM programs and promoting STEM careers across Louisiana. MSB President Holzenthal is on the board of directors of Core Element, a nonprofit dedicated to providing teacher professional development, STEM educational curricula and enrichment activities for middle school students. In addition to sponsoring GNOSEF, MSB engineers also participate as mentors for students competing in the First Robotics Competition Bayou Regionals and the company partnered with YouthForce NOLA Internship Program (YFI), a program which aims to help youth make connections and acquire long-term employment opportunities with local companies in STEM fields.
